The buzz about The Game Awards has been intense, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team is likely building a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it pioneered the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs that are viable with a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also wonderfully flexible, letting players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be completed in a variety of manners, often in lateral fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, players can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
